Big snaps for Adam on getting us around and out of the Arc de Triomphe (and another similar roundabout) alive. He kept his cool, and he knew what he was doing. He's the best! But a word to the wise...do not, and I mean DO NOT drive around the Arc de Triomphe if you can avoid it. You'll probably shit your pants.
So after the fiasco of spending 45 minutes of getting out of Paris, we were off to the region of Normandy! We will be staying in Commes overnight to check out the D-Day Beaches and other WWII sites that are nearby.
Before checking into our Airbnb, we stopped in the town of Bayeux. Bayeux is a cute little medieval town, with a lot of history to it. A very important fact is that it was the first city to be liberated from the Battle of Normandy on June 7, 1944 (1 day after D-Day).
So once we got to Bayeux, we had some tasty galettes for lunch. Then we decided to walk around to explore the town for a little bit.
We also stopped by the Notre Dame Cathedral, which was very beautiful! It used to be the home of the Bayeux Tapestry, which is one of the bigger attractions in this town. But now it's in its own museum where you have to pay 9 Euros to see a "big blanket" (as what my Dad would say).
Next, we headed over to the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, which went into great detail on the storming of the beaches by the United States, Britain, and Canada along with the different battles and liberated cities. The museum also showed a 25-minute video about the Battles of Normandy and liberating the cities. I can't say much about the video because I fell asleep as soon as it started, but Adam thought it was pretty informative.
After the museum, we walked over to the British War Cemetery, which was very close to the museum. The cemetery felt very quiet, and sad. Looking at the graves, there were so many that died between the ages of 20-29. It's just hard to believe (and very sad) that men that young went to war and died for their country.
After the cemetery, we went to check into our AirBnb place, which is absolutely adorable! It's a very quaint cottage-like place in the countryside. It's very home-y and you feel very cozy as soon as you walk in.
Tomorrow our plan is to see the beaches and the United States cemetery. We're all very excited to be able to see the sites!
